Google Earth's Social Network, Complete with Avatars?

Is Google using Arizona State University students to test out a new social network that could be part of Google Earth?

Rumor has it that several students have been granted the opportunity to test a new product that will be launched by a major Internet company later this year.

The application for participation asks students if they're interested in social networking, 3D modeling and video games. As the project's current code name is "My World" with a globe logo, some have conjectured that this signals involvement from Google Earth.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

A Google virtual world. Now that would be interesting. Watch out Second Life, Google is going to do something even better.

This might actually be the most exciting thing I can think of right now. I actually wanted to create this until people reminded me that I have very little coding experience and that all the major sites are working on geocoding as we speak... Sign me up and goodbye real world.

William Gibson says that cyberspace is "everting" which I think is a pretty neat idea. Real reality and cyber reality overlapping with an infinite overlay...neato!
