Australia set to sell uranium to India

advertisement

Australia may sell uranium to India if the federal cabinet approves a submission from Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer.

The move would allow the deal despite India not being a signatory to the international Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Government sources have told The Australian newspaper that the cabinet's National Security Committee will consider the submission.

Prime Minister John Howard is reported to have told colleagues that the public cannot understand why Australia exports uranium to China but refuses to export to India.

China has been accused in the past of complicity in exporting nuclear technology but India has an impeccable record of never having done so.

India needs assured supplies of uranium to fuel its 14 nuclear power plants that will generate energy to drive its economic boom.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

This impending decision is in keeping with the egregious dishonesty of the Bush-ite Australian Government - it is based on the Goebellsian FICTION that the uranium oxide yellow cake that we presently sell to nuclear weapons states (prospective mass murdering, Terracidal, nuclear terrorist states) China, France, Britain, the US (and thence to Israel), and now it seems to India, will be stored in a common warehouse - that on the LEFT hand side will go for peaceful purposes and that identical stuff on the RIGHT hand side to the production of weapons of mass destruction.

Fortunately Australia is finally wising up to this gang of egregiously dishonest, Bush-ite war criminals and Terracides (see "War on Terra, Climate Criminals": link).

The total amount of anthropogenic (man-made) high level nuclear waste is now about 100 billion Curies (Ci) (see: link ) - that's 100 billion Ci/6.5 billion humans in the world = 15.4 Ci per person = 15 million microCuries for each person in the world - NOTING that it merely takes 1 microgram of Plutonium-239 (17.3 microCuries) in the lung to cause lung cancer.

You can thus see the urgency of having zero tolerance for Bush-ite lying and spin in our acutely threatened world.

I don't think uranium is the long term solution to energy. The only thing we have in abundance in Australia is sunshine - why are we not then investing in solar energy solutions???

In his recently published book "Greenhouse solutions with sustainable energy", Australia's top sustainable energy expert Dr Mark Diesendorf argues that science, technology and economics instruct that coal and uranium should remain in the ground, that renewables can meet our energy demands and that the only residual argument is about politics and right wing government support for uranium and fossil fuel mining and power corporations.

Bi-partisan political cowardice means that coal and uranium is being backed (although Labor is vastly better on renewables than the Bush-ite Coalition). The World thinks otherwise: thus a recent expert scientific assessment of the global situation by a group of Chinese and German scholars (Martinot et al, "Renewable energy futures: targets, scenarios and pathways"; forthcoming in Annual Reviews of Environment and Resources, 2007: link ):

"Global, Europe-wide, and country-specific scenarios show 10% to 50% shares of primary energy from renewables by 2050. By 2020, many targets and scenarios show 20-35% share of electricity from renewables, increasing to 50-80% by 2050 under the highest scenarios."
